The Coalition to Grow Carbon Markets recognised as Best Initiative of the Year in annual ranking

Government-led coalition, which launched in June 2025, topped Environmental Finance's Voluntary Carbon Market Rankings

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM, September 22, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- The Coalition to Grow Carbon Markets has been voted Best Initiative of the Year in Environmental Finance's Annual Voluntary Carbon Market Rankings.

The award comes a little over a year after the government-led coalition formally launched at London Climate Action Week in June 2025 with the goal of unlocking corporate demand for carbon credits through coordinated leadership.

Recent data from financial services company MSCI showed that global carbon credit retirements could quadruple by 2035 with more supportive government policies to stimulate corporate demand.

Since its launch by five founding member countries, the Coalition has expanded to include 14 governments, most recently adding the host of this year’s UN COP31 climate talks, Türkiye, as well as Ghana and Luxembourg.

Last year, the Coalition released its Shared Principles, which provide a high-level framework for the role of carbon credits in credible corporate decarbonisation plans. At COP31, the Coalition will publish a policy playbook to help guide the efforts of its members in accelerating demand for carbon credits.

“Environmental Finance warmly congratulates all the winners of the 2026 Voluntary Carbon Market Awards,” said Annabelle Palmer of Environmental Finance. “Their achievements reflect the innovation, leadership and commitment needed to strengthen the integrity and impact of the voluntary carbon market, and we are delighted to recognise their important contribution to advancing credible climate action.”

Last week, the Coalition announced that a former top climate advisor to New Zealand, Lindy Fursman, joined as the executive director of its secretariat.

Dr. Fursman most recently served as director for climate and energy policy at the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change, advising governments on climate mitigation, adaptation and energy transition policy.

The recognition from Environmental Finance comes during Climate Week NYC, where the Coalition is engaging government, business and industry stakeholders ahead of COP31, where the Türkiye presidency is expected to make carbon markets a priority.

“The Coalition to Grow Carbon Markets has achieved an enormous amount in a short time, and we will build on that progress by working with governments to implement the policies that unlock the potential of high-integrity carbon credit markets,” said Lydia Sheldrake, Director of the Secretariat for the Coalition

“I am delighted that the Coalition has been named the Best Initiative of the Year in Environmental Finance, with its leadership recognised across the market.”
